A man believed to have been shot in Jamul died Wednesday at an Alpine fire station, authorities said.

Deputies from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station responded around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 16000 block of Loose Creek Road in Jamul. They did not locate any victims at the residence, however, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly afterward, the Alpine Fire Protection District notified the sheriff’s office that a shooting victim had arrived at their station. Emergency personnel initiated lifesaving measures but the victim succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending confirmation and notification of next of kin.

A man has been contacted and detained for questioning in the case, according to the sheriff’s office. Sheriff’s detectives were interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence to determine the circumstances and motive behind the shooting.

The shooting at this point appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no known threat to the community, the sheriff’s office stated.

Authorities urged anyone with information to call the sheriff’s Homicide Unit at 858-285-6330 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477
