“For me, it’s about respect,” said Keith Rinses.

“These men and women gave so much to our country. Even if they don’t always remember every detail of their service, it’s still a part of who they are, and it’s our job to honor them,” added Rinses, himself a Navy veteran and a maintenance director for Ivy Park at Sabre Springs, an assisted living and memory care center.

Rinses led a Veterans Day flag retirement ceremony Tuesday morning at the senior living community to commemorate all those who served, and especially those who live at Ivy Park — many of whom are living with memory loss.

Others, like Rinses, remember their honors for them, even when they cannot.

“I believe it’s really important to honor veterans for the sacrifices they’ve made for this country. Especially living in a big military town in San Diego, Veterans Day is a great way to thank those who have served and protected America,” Rinses said.

This year’s Veterans Day carries more significance than most, as celebrations across the country commemorate 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, and 250 years since the establishment of the U.S. Marine Corps.

During the short program, a weathered American flag was respectfully retired, and the community spent time honoring each other’s stories and reflections. The celebration was a way for Rinses to create a meaningful experiences for his fellow veterans.

“Keith has a wonderful heart and still finds ways to serve others by ensuring our residents’ rooms and spaces are always clean and functional, said Josie Miranda, Despite his “hard core” outside, he’s a wonderful person and we’re grateful for his service to our country and now to Ivy Park at Sabre Springs,” Josie Miranda, activity director for Ivy Park at Sabre Springs, said.
