Trough of Super Typhoon Choi-Wan brings rain over Visayas, Mindanao — PAGASA

The trough, or extension, of Super Typhoon Choi-Wan is expected to bring rains over Mindanao and parts of Visayas, posing a risk of flooding and landslides, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Monday.

Choi-Wan was last located 2,580 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), according to PAGASA’s 10:00 a.m. storm outlook.

“It’s no longer expected to enter PAR,” Aldczar D. Aurelio, PAGASA weather specialist, said in a separate 5:00 a.m. press briefing in Filipino.

“But its trough is affecting Visayas and Mindanao. So scattered rains are expected throughout the day,” he also said.

PAGASA warned of possible flooding and landslides in these areas, especially during severe thunderstorms.

The effects of Choi-Wan are no longer expected tomorrow as it moves farther toward Japan, Mr. Aurelio said.

However, it will be replaced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which will bring rains over Visayas and Mindanao, also posing a risk of flooding and landslides.

The ITCZ is a cloud band formed through the convergence of trade winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
