Southbound I-5 reopens early after weekend construction work

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A portion of Interstate 5 has reopened ahead of schedule after weekend construction caused a full closure of all southbound lanes.

Caltrans just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday said southbound I-5, between State Route 52 and Mission Bay Drive, reopened to traffic. The freeway was initially slated to be closed through 5 a.m. Monday.

The department of transportation posted a video on Saturday showing the work on the freeway was going as planned.

The closure caused some minor traffic delays over the weekend on freeways across San Diego as drivers were detoured.

Caltrans said crews improved the pavement along the main roadway, shoulders and freeway ramps, part of a project that costs more than $113,740,000.
