Sewage release closes ocean water in North Beach & Coronado Dog Beach

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — North Beach and the Coronado Dog Beach in Coronado were closed to the public on Tuesday because of a sewage release.
San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality (DEHQ) officials closed North Beach at 12:26 p.m. Tuesday after issuing a water contact closure because of a sewage release.
The department said the closure extends 1,000 feet northwest and 1,000 feet southeast from the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Ocean Court in Coronado.
Beachgoers are advised not to enter the ocean in that area at this time as the ocean water contains sewage and may cause illness, according to the DEHQ.
The ocean in that area will remain closed to swimmers and surfers until water samples come back with safe levels for swimming.
At this time, the La Jolla Children’s Pool, Glorietta Bay, Silver Strand Shoreline and the Tecolote Shores Swim Area are under an advisory, according to the DEHQ's Beach & Bay water quality page.
A chronic advisory remains in effect for the Children's Pool in La Jolla.
Closer to the border, the ocean shoreline from the International Border to Carnation Avenue in Imperial Beach has been closed since Oct. 13, and will remain closed until sampling confirms those areas are safe for water contact, according to the DEHQ.
A closure has been in place for the Tijuana Slough Shoreline from the U.S.-Mexico border, including Border Field State Park and the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge, to south of Seacoast Drive, on and off since 2021.
The public is advised to avoid the water in those areas as it is impacted by sewage and can cause illness.
A general rain advisory that was in place for San Diego County beaches after last week's rainstorm was lifted on Friday. Rain advisories are issued for 72 hours after it rains more than 0.20 of an inch, as the storm drains, creeks, rivers, and lagoon outlets can carry polluted water to the ocean.
