San Diego Zoo Safari Park announces names of two baby giraffes

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is showing off its baby giraffes and publicly announced their names on Tuesday.

You can find the newest additions to the giraffe herd -- Subeera and Matope -- at the Safari Park's African Plains.

The baby giraffes are just the latest in the over 100 births that have taken place in the park's African Plains habitat, the zoo's website states. Giraffe's are around 6-feet-tall when they are born and grow to be the tallest land animals.

Subeera means "patience is rewarded" and Matope means "mud" in Swahili, the park said in its announcement. Staff say Subeera is a sweet girl, and described Matope as a playful boy.

Visitors at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park can view the giraffes, and other wildlife like rhinos, from the African Plains' Kijamii Overlook, the Africa Tram, or from a Wildlife Safari, Cart Safari, or Ultimate Safari.
