San Diego market owner worries tariffs on Chinese products could impact sales
Talks between the US and China are expected to take place in Switzerland this week, which could potentially resolve the tariff dispute and reduce the impact on low-income customers in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI)--Tariff talks between the United States and China could happen by the end of this week in Switzerland.
About a month after President Trump set off a tariff fight with many countries, the impact from those directed at Chinese imports can be seen at Minh Huong in the City Heights area of San Diego.
“If this tariff doesn’t resolve soon, we may end up trying to slow down a little bit because the sales probably will drop," said David Chou, who opened the Asian foods-focused market in 1981.
He said tariffs have impacted the Asian community more than anyone else.
Right now, the U.S. has tariffs set as high as 145 percent on imports from China. China has responded with 125 percent tariffs on U.S. goods.
For Chou, it means having to raise his prices.
“We look at a lot of customers here for the last thirty to forty years, and a lot of them are low-income people, so we cannot really raise the price to make a profit on top of these people," said Chou.
He says while only a quarter of what he sells is from China, it’s impacting all products.
He said that’s because of shipping costs and a 10 percent cost on top of that. At first, his customers were panic buying products like noodles.
“At this point, I think that people have settled down a little bit. They’ll probably wait to see if China and the U.S. can have some kind of talks so that the amount of tariff will reduce, so that way they don’t have to pay high prices like right now," he said.
Talks are expected to take place between the Treasury Secretary, the U.S. Trade Representative and the Chinese Vice Premier in Switzerland in the coming days, according to AP.
