Patchy clouds hugging the coastal mountain slopes are expected to clear overnight, ushering in a drier stretch Sunday through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday highs are forecast to reach 69 along the coast, 66 to 70 in the western valleys, 61 to 66 near the foothills, 49 to 58 in the mountains and 66 to 70 in the deserts, the NWS said.

Santa Ana winds return and strengthen into Monday and Tuesday, bringing gusty conditions to the mountains and valleys along with a noticeable inland warmup above seasonal averages.

By midweek, meteorologists said the weather pattern is expected to shift as a storm system approaches from the southwest, raising the chance for scattered showers and a cooler, unsettled finish to the week.
