SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Flying out of Terminal 1 at the San Diego Airport on Monday or Tuesday? Travelers need to know which Terminal 1 they will be arriving at or flying out of.

Here's what you need to know ahead of the big changes this week.

The new Terminal 1 at the San Diego International Airport is set to open on Monday, Sept. 22 starting with some flights that evening.

The airport said the existing Terminal 1 will be closed fully on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and the new Terminal 1 will open, so travelers need to pay attention to which terminal they need to be at on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday flights

On Monday, San Diego Airport departures will still use the existing Terminal 1, according to the airport. No departing flights are scheduled from the new terminal that day.

Arriving flights starting at 8:55 p.m. on Monday will arrive to the new Terminal 1, the airport said. All earlier flights will arrive at the existing Terminal 1.

Tuesday flights

On Tuesday, all arriving and departing flights will use the new Terminal 1, according to the airport.

The new terminal has 30 gates, 13 security checkpoint lanes, 30 restaurants and retail stores, 185 EV charging stations and 5,200 parking spaces, the airport stated on its website.

The new terminal also has a new three-lane on-airport entrance road for quicker access to the airport by diverting vehicles from Laurel Street and bypassing traffic on N. Harbor Drive, along with new bicycle lanes and a pedestrian path.

Drivers going to the San Diego Airport need to pay attention to the new traffic pattern that was put in place in early September as it will remain in place through 2028.

When the airport closes the existing Terminal 1 on Tuesday, the building will be demolished to make room for Phase 1B of construction.

The San Diego Airport said the security lanes and concessions significantly increased with the new terminal:

  • New T1 security lanes: 13
  • Old T1 security lanes: 10
    • Increase = 30%
  • New T1 phase 1a: 17 concessions (phase 1b will bring total to 30)
  • Old T1: 9 concessions
    • Increase: 275%
