San Diego airport gives community preview ahead of new Terminal 1 opening

SAN DIEGO, Calif (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego International Airport is just days away from opening its brand-new Terminal 1, but before the first flights depart, the community is getting a first look.
On Sunday, the airport hosted a Community Reveal Open House, giving participants a chance to tour the new terminal through a simulation and self-guided walkthrough.
Visitors experienced the modern design, spacious layouts, and new concessions offering complimentary samples. Many also tested out the passenger process, from arriving by transit to going through security.
Leighanne Bartlett, who took part in the simulation, said the experience felt smooth. “I like the high ceilings, and we’re going to go check out the outdoor patio, which they don’t offer at other places,” Bartlett said. “It looks like it’s going to be really accommodating.”
Airport officials say the event not only welcomes the public inside for the first time but also provides valuable feedback ahead of opening day.
“If you’ve ever been in the old Terminal 1, you may have experienced it was very cramped,” Nicole Hall with the San Diego Airport authority said. “The major difference is that in the new terminal is it’s very expansive. There’s much more room in the gate areas while you’re waiting for your flights.”
The new Terminal 1 is scheduled to be fully operational Sept. 23.
