Police have identified a man who was stabbed to death in an encampment early on the morning of July 4, and they are asking anyone with information to come forward.

SDPD said it initially received the report of a stabbing at about 1:14 a.m. July 4 near the intersection of 21st St. and Commercial Street.

Officers found a man there who appeared to be in his late twenties with stab wounds near an encampment behind a Walmart building. They took the man to a nearby hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.

The victim has been identified as Jason Poindexter, a 46-year-old Black male.

Following the stabbing, a man and woman — both possibly homeless — were spotted leaving the area in different directions.

The man is described as white or Latino, bald, and stocky, wearing a hat and a baby blue shirt. The woman is described as white, in her 40s to 50s, about 5’ 9” with a thin build, brown hair in a ponytail, black sweater over a white shirt, black leggings, and heavy mascara.

On July 7, a 45-year-old woman female was arrested for the case and booked into Las Colinas Detention Facility. However, she has since been released pending further investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293, or San Diego Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
