One pedestrian dead, another hurt in SR-78 crash

RAMONA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Two pedestrians crossing State Route 78 were hit by a vehicle over the weekend in the Ramona area, resulting in one death and another serious injury.

The incident occurred on Saturday around 9:20 p.m. on westbound on SR-78, just west of Seventh Street, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release Monday.

Authorities learned the pedestrians crossed in low-lighting and in the Toyota's path of travel when the driver of the Toyota, a 19-year-old man of Ramona, struck the 35-year-old woman and 42-year-old man.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene while the 42-year-old man was taken to hospital with major injuries.

The driver and passenger of the Toyota did were not injured in the crash.

Authorities believe driving under the influence may be a factor in the collision.

Cpt. Monteagudo with CHP advises pedestrians to always use sidewalks and crosswalks.

“Walking in the roadway puts you at serious risk of injury or worse. Be alert, be seen and never assume drivers can see you,” he said.
