New heights: Endangered Masai giraffe welcomes first calf at San Diego Zoo

Endangered Masai giraffe Mawe has stepped into motherhood for the first time welcoming her first calf last month, the San Diego Zoo announced Monday.
Visitors can now catch a glimpse of mom and the yet-to-be-named calf bonding in their maternity area in the zoo’s Urban Jungle giraffe habitat.
It’s a full-circle moment: both Mawe and the calf’s father, Chifu, were born at the zoo. The calf joins another little one, Lemayian, who was born in July, according to zoo officials.
Masai giraffes are classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.
The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, part of the Masai Giraffe Species Survival Plan Program, said it’s working to protect the natural habitat of giraffes through its Savanna Conservation Hub.
