City officials estimate they will be able to get more money from parking at Balboa Park than they originally anticipated.
Backstory: The city is dealing with a brutal budget deficit and has been looking for revenue anywhere it can find it. Historically, parking at Balboa Park has been free, but that is all about to change.
The new money does — and does not — help the budget woes.
Parking revenue generated at Balboa Park will have to be put back into the park, a spokesperson for the mayor said. That means parking revenue, instead of the city’s general fund, will pay for the park’s upgrades and maintenance. In turn, general fund money will be freed up for other things.
Discussions are still ongoing about how much parking will cost in different parts of the park, but the city now expects it will generate roughly $15.5 million for the current fiscal year.
North County Report: Two Republican-Led Cities Push for Immigration Reform
In response to ongoing immigration enforcement in North County, city leaders in Escondido and Encinitas are pushing for immigration reform.
North County reporter Tigist Layne reports that the two Republican-majority City Councils took different approaches to speaking out against recent arrests by ICE agents.
Escondido opted for a bipartisan letter addressed to San Diego County’s congressional delegation calling for clearer pathways to citizenship and increased resources for immigration courts.
Encinitas, on the other hand, took a bolder approach. City leaders are launching a “Know Your Rights” campaign, calling for an end to ICE agents wearing masks, looking into establishing safe zones and more.
