A 65-year-old motorist was killed Friday in a solo crash on Interstate 5 in Sorrento Valley, authorities said.

The man had just driven onto the freeway from Genesee Avenue when his northbound Hyundai Sonata veered across the roadway and struck the center divider at high speed shortly after 10 a.m, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle then crossed back the other way and hit a freeway sign and a guardrail on the east side of the Sorrento Valley Road off-ramp, CHP public-affairs Officer Michael Wessendorf said.

The driver wound up trapped in the car and died at the scene. The CHP withheld his name pending family notification. It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the solo crash.
