ITCZ brings rain in Visayas, Mindanao amid Typhoon Surigae

Thunderstorms are expected in Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and four other areas due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), as Typhoon Surigae, formerly known locally as Queenie, is being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said on Monday.
The ITCZ, a band of clouds where winds from the Northern and Southern hemispheres converge, is expected to bring thunderstorms over Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
“The effects of ITCZ are expected to persist in Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao until Tuesday and Wednesday,” Aldczar D. Aurelio, PAGASA weather specialist, said during a 5:00 a.m. weather forecast in Filipino.
PAGASA warned of possible flooding and landslides during severe thunderstorms in these areas.
In Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, generally fair weather is expected, but localized thunderstorms may persist, especially during the afternoon, posing a risk of flooding and landslides.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Surigae is still being monitored outside the PAR after exiting the area on Sunday.
It was located 1,140 kilometers northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon, packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 215 kph as of 8:00 a.m.
“It is unlikely to re-enter PAR as it is moving east-northeast,” Mr. Aurelio said. He also said that the bureau is not monitoring any other weather disturbances within PAR or its monitoring domain. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
