With Labor Day weekend officially bringing the season to a close, San Diegans can reminisce about summer fun – but often overlooked are the wasteful remnants of summer taking over the beaches after the partygoers head home.

Starting Sept. 2, local nonprofit I Love A Clean San Diego is caring for the coast by launching an eight-month cleanup campaign called LOVE SD. The campaign kicks off Tuesday afternoon at Belmont Park, with commemorative remarks from San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria.

An expected 200 volunteers are joining the campaign for post-Labor day cleanup launch, restoring the beach community and ensuring a safe, welcoming, and clean shared space.

Volunteers can enjoy a free “LOVE SD” t-shirt, a one ride pass courtesy of Belmont Park, live music presented by iHeartRadio and San Diego County Toyota Dealers, and can enter in a drawing for a variety of prizes like hotel stays and theme park tickets.

ILACSD first started in 1954 under the name San Diego War Against Litter Committee. In the 1970s, their slogan at the time, “I love a clean San Diego,” eventually took over as the new name. In 1989 the organization merged with another leading environmental organization, San Diego Ecology Center.

Today, ILACSD is pushing SD communities to take a simple pledge: “Recycle. Compost. Reduce Litter. Every Day.”

Niagara Cares, the charitable division of Niagara Bottling, launched and supports the LOVE program, of which LOVE SD is a part. Other supporting groups include Keep America BeautifulDoSomething, and The National Recreation and Park Association.
