SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A horse was euthanized after falling during a race at Del Mar over the weekend and the jockey was thrown from the horse but able to walk away.
Three-year-old Thoroughbred colt Uncrowned King fell during Race 7 at the Del Mar Racetrack on Saturday and was seriously injured.
According to the official race chart, Uncrowned King "chased from between, stumbled near the quarter pole, was pulled up and transported off the course via equine ambulance."
Officials with the Del Mar Racetrack confirmed the horse was "humanely euthanized" after suffering from a fractured shoulder following a fall during Race 7 on Saturday. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Jockey Alfredo Bautista was thrown from the horse but did not appear to be seriously injured.
“We offer our sincere condolences to the connections of Uncrowned King who was humanely euthanized by the attending veterinarians after Saturday's seventh race due to the nature of his injury. For the last several years, Del Mar has been recognized as one of the safest racetracks in the country and we will continue our work to ensure the safest environment possible here for racing and training," Del Mar Racetrack officials said in a statement to FOX 5/KUSI.
Uncrowned King had only raced twice during his career including on Saturday, his horse profile shows.
This first horse death of the 2025 season comes just a few weeks after Jockey Tiago Pereira was seriously injured after his horse fell during an opening weekend race. The horse was minorly injured.
Del Mar Racetrack's summer season runs through September 7.
