FBI offers $25K reward in armed robbery, shooting of hikers near U.S.-Mexico border

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for shooting at and robbing four hikers near the U.S.-Mexico border earlier this year.

According to the FBI’s San Diego Field Office, the assault and armed robbery occurred around 10:37 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, approximately 1,000 feet from the international border in Imperial County.

Authorities say two unknown Hispanic male suspects opened fire on a group of four hikers, striking one of them. The suspects then approached the hikers and, at gunpoint, stole valuables from the group before fleeing the area. The injured hiker sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The two suspects were last seen traveling southwest toward the international border.

“The FBI will not stop until we find the individuals responsible for this violent crime on these innocent hikers,” said Special Agent in Charge Mark Dargis of the FBI’s San Diego Field Office. “No one should ever fear being shot at and robbed at gunpoint—regardless of where they are. The FBI and our law enforcement partners will put all our collective investigative resources behind locating and apprehending those responsible to ensure justice is served.”
