A pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV early Thursday on a rural road in East County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 55-year-old El Cajon man was crossing a dimly lit stretch of state Route 94 near Hillside Drive in Jamul when the eastbound 2017 Hyundai Tucson hit him about 4:15 a.m.

The victim died at the scene, public-affairs Officer Jasmine Lopez said. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Intoxication was not a factor in his death, Lopez said.
