Deadline to claim over $1 million in unclaimed monies nears

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The County of San Diego has $1,139,000 available to residents owed refunds from taxes.

Taxpayers have until Sunday to claim amounts between $15 and $33,261.31 from the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s annual Unclaimed Monies program.

Unclaimed monies is usually a result from warrants/checks that are undeliverable by the postal service, overpaid taxes or instances in which individuals and organizations are doing business with or receiving County services, per the County of San Diego.

Money that isn't claimed by the deadline will be rolled into the General Fund.

Those wondering if they are owed money can check through the Treasurer-Tax Collector's website; directions will be provided on the unclaimed money page of the website to find out how to receive the refunds.

Residents can also visit Treasurer-Tax Collector office locations to see hard copies of the list:

  • Main office – County Administration Center: 1600 Pacific Highway, Room 162, San Diego, CA 92101
  • Chula Vista branch office: 590 Third Ave., Chula Vista, CA 91910  
  • East County branch office (new): 10144 Mission Gorge Road, Santee, CA 92071  
  • San Marcos branch office: 141 East Carmel Street, San Marcos, CA 92078  

Residents can also email their claim to refunds@sdcounty.ca.gov or call 1-877-829-4732 for more information. Anyone can sign up to receive emails when new unclaimed money lists are posted.
