Cyclist on trail falls over 50 feet off cliff in southeastern San Diego County

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A cyclist walking his bike along a trail on a canyon wall fell off a cliff over the weekend in the area of Otay Lakes County Park.
The incident occurred Saturday when Border Patrol agents heard cries for help coming from a remote canyon next to the Savage Dam, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release Wednesday.
When agents got into the canyon, they found the man suffering from multiple serious injuries.
The cyclist told agents he lost his footing while walking his bike along the trail on the canyon wall and fell more than 50 feet into the bottom of the canyon.
The cyclist was unable to move for hours, calling for help until CBP agents found him.
“There is no doubt in my mind that these agents saved this man’s life,” said San Diego Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker. “I am truly thankful the agents were in the right place at the right time to make a difference.”
The cyclist was airlifted to a hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.
The cyclist's bike and other personal belongings were recovered the next day and delivered to the his wife.
