Cup of Chisme: It’s Beef Week, Baby!

Cup of Chisme: It’s Beef Week, Baby!

That’s right. Our annual series on the region’s most intense battles, disputes and beefs is back. Starting tomorrow, we’re going to publish a story every day unpacking certified beef between agencies, city leaders and … butts?

Sneak peek: On the latest episode of the VOSD Podcast, my co-hosts Bella Ross and Jakob McWhinney talked about their beef week stories. McWhinney is taking a look at the oldest beef of all: San Diegans vs. Arizonans. And Ross is going to unpack her own personal beef with public benches, or lack thereof .

Get a taste of the beef: If you missed last year’s Beef Week, you can catch up here.

A School’s Winning Formula

Last year, South County reporter Jim Hinch told a story about a mariachi teacher at Southwest Middle School who helped put the school on the map. At the time, the teacher was worried his music program wasn’t going to survive amid a wave of arts funding cuts.

His concerns didn’t materialize, and the program is thriving. Hinch attended the school’s Fall Festival in October and observed how the school has used a mix of science, arts and schoolwide projects to keep kids engaged.

That’s especially important because the school serves students with some of the highest needs and in communities with the lowest income.

Going Green Is Expensive

Voice of San Diego intern Jenna Ramiscal published a story this week about how one transit district’s carbon free efforts could come at the expense of bus service.

Ramiscal explains that the North County Transit District has buses that run on hydrogen gas, which costs the district over $2,000 to fully fuel one bus.

“If we don’t start to see a relief (in) cost, and we have to continue to buy zero-emission buses, it will come at an expense to service,” the district’s CEO said. “We really don’t want that.”

The district is currently exploring a cheaper way to get the gas. Ramiscal gets into all the details in this story. Read the full story here.

More Chisme to Start Your Week

  • For giggles: I recently got chickens and now that’s my entire personality. I also just learned that the city of San Diego has a chicken policy. The Q&A section on the city’s website is pretty funny. Read it here. If you’re a fellow chicken owner, send me your coop tips.
  • Our City Hall reporter writes that the San Diego Zoo will start charging for parking but we still don’t know what how much the city is going to get.
  • Get your Voice swag. If you haven’t already, visit our merch store. We’ve got some cool stuff.

I hope you enjoyed time with friends and family this week.
