Chula Vista sushi restaurant supports military families during government shutdown

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- While hearing about the challenges military families are facing during the government shutdown, CiCi Chen and her husband, who own Ming’s Revolving Sushi and Bar in Chula Vista, decided to offer a free meal to active duty military members and their families.

“We just want to show our appreciation to their service, we are honoring their contribution to the country,” said CiCi Chen, owner of Ming’s Revolving Sushi & Bar.

“Well, the owners, James and CiCi -- they have a big heart," said Ivan Munoz, Ming’s Revolving Sushi & Bar Head Chef. "They like to show their support to the community.”

After posting about the deal on social media, the customers started coming in.

“Since last Saturday, we’ve given out over 6,000 plates,” said Chen.

And in return, they’ve received endless appreciation from the military community.

“I really think it’s nice to see them give back to the community,” said Tom Phousong Phouang, who is actively serving in the Navy.

Military members say even something as simple as a meal can be a big help to families dealing with piling bills.

“We’re just really appreciative of any blessings that we can have and any support to the troops, service members, we’re really grateful for that,” Phousong Phouang said.

The deal includes six plates per person off the revolving sushi conveyor belt – with cooked and non-fish options also available.

The owners encourage families to bring their children, who will also eat for free and can enjoy the high-tech atmosphere, including robots and delivery cars.

“Ultimately, at the end of the day, we want to bring people together with food,” said Munoz.

The owners of the restaurant say the best way to show support is to spread the word.

“Let all the military families know about this and let more people enjoy, and that would be the greatest support to us,” said Chen.

To take advantage of this deal, an active-duty military ID is the only requirement, and the restaurant says they plan to keep it going throughout the duration of the shutdown.
