Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst turns up at his own lookalike contest in Omaha

Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst showed up to his own lookalike contest in Omaha, gifting a bag of his clothes to the winner.

The event was held on Friday (August 1) as a benefit for Omaha Girls Rock, a music education scheme in the Nebraska city, which is also the home of Oberst.

The contestants each received a single cigarette and they performed karaoke of Bright Eyes songs together, and much to the surprise of all in attendance, the real-life Oberst showed up himself.

The singer-songwriter brought a garbage bag of his own clothes to the event and gifted them to the winning Oberst lookalike. Check out photos below, as well as a post from the lucky winner.

Celebrities attending their own lookalike contests has become something of a trend in recent years – Glen Powell did so in Austin, Texas last November and promised a film cameo to the winner’s family, while Timothée Chalamet went undercover at one in New York a month earlier. Drake, meanwhile, awarded $10,000 to the winner of his lookalike contest in Toronto last year.

As for Bright Eyes, their latest album ‘Five Dice, All Threes’ landed last year to critical acclaim, and included collaborations with artists including Cat Power, The National’s Matt Berninger and the So So Glos’ Alex Orange Drink.

Speaking about the project in an interview with NME, the frontman said: “This time, I still hope the songs resonate and have equal amounts of meaning, but as far as the sounds and approach to the music, it’s a bit lighter.

“The word ‘fun’ is very rarely used to describe my band, but maybe it is a bit more fun,” he continued. “When we last went on tour we were cruising around with a 14-piece band and strings and horns. This record is going to be just guitars; rock and roll stuff.”

They also released the mash-up single ‘Recluse I Don’t Have To Love’ with fellow Omaha band Cursive earlier this year.
