Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 3 Answered One Burning Question, Mostly Thanks To An Annoying Rival Cop In Danny’s Face
Danny never did play nice with other cops in his territory, and moving to Boston didn’t change that.
Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 3 reminded me of when Danny used to have to work with a guest cop from out of town and butted heads with him all hour long.
Danny and Brian’s adversarial relationship felt like that, but it was very different because Danny was no longer on his home turf.

Technically, Danny Was The One Who Didn’t Belong
He’s new to Boston, while Brian has been working there a while, so in some ways, the roles were reversed.
Danny wasn’t on his home turf, having to put up with some intruder who wanted to do things his way. He WAS the intruder.
Of course, half of Brian’s problem was that he was afraid Danny would replace him in Lena’s life.
If Danny were still in New York, he’d probably have similar feelings about whoever Baez is working with now.
That led to an interesting dynamic, but at least Boston Blue reassured us that Danny won’t be moving on with Lena any time soon!
I’ve waited years for Danny and Baez to get together, so one of my worst fears is that Boston Blue will quickly tear them apart and put Danny with Lena instead.

(I fan-boyed hard over that last scene, in case you’re wondering. But Boston Blue better pick up with Baez still in Boston next time!)
Boston Blue Played Up The Idea of Danny Being a Fish Out Of Water
Brian’s frustrations weren’t all offbase.

There appear to be different rules about what cops can and can’t do in Boston, and Brian was determined to stick to them, while Danny wanted to break every rule to get the perp put away.
That was a major reason the two didn’t get along, though Lena seemed to be amused by it.

There was a definite lighthearted tone to her comments about how Brian and Danny couldn’t get along, though I’m sure she was annoyed by having to play referee all the time.
I was glad that Brian and Lena decided to give their relationship a chance in the end, too. The happier those two are together, the less likely she is to be an obstacle to Danny and Baez’s continued relationship.
Sarah Is Not Frank Reagan, But That’s Okay
Danny and Brian took their conflict to Sarah, who promptly made the only logical choice and ordered the two cops to work together.
I couldn’t help comparing what she did to how Frank would have handled a situation like that, but I think it’s time to let go of that.
I loved Blue Bloods, and I especially loved Frank’s moral compass.
But Boston Blue Season 1 isn’t Blue Bloods Season 15, and it isn’t trying to be — it’s its own, similar show that follows Danny’s life AFTER Blue Bloods.

The only way we’ll get more Frank now is if Tom Selleck guest stars (and that could still happen — if you thought they were tight-lipped about Baez’s cameos so far, imagine how hard this show might work to keep a visit from Tom Selleck under wraps.)
This episode did a lot to establish who Sarah was.
She has the same issue with her family demanding immediate help with job-related issues that Erin always did on Blue Bloods, and she seems fair as the leader of the police department.
I loved Blue Bloods and now I love Boston Blue.
I’m honored to be able to cover these shows, but it doesn’t work if I’m only talking to myself.

But I was especially interested in her conflict with Phoebe.
One of the Things I Miss About Blue Bloods Is Its Unique Focus on Family Issues

Boston Blue made a good start with the family dinners, but I wasn’t feeling them as a family until Sarah’s subplot with Phoebe came up.
Phoebe engaged in typical adolescent subterfuge by telling Sarah that she was staying at her friend’s while her friend claimed to be staying at Sarah’s.
I don’t know why teenagers always do that. It’s a recipe for disaster because all that needs to happen to bust them is one parent calling the other when they can’t get in touch with their kid.
I can understand why Phoebe felt Sarah’s response was over-the-top and embarrassing, though Sarah may have helped prevent a worse situation.
That guy seemed to respect her boundaries, but the fact that he followed up her refusal of alcohol with attempting to kiss her was somewhat concerning.
Phoebe doesn’t know what could have happened if Sarah hadn’t shown up, but she’s 15, so all she cares about is that she was humiliated in front of her friends by Dad’s girlfriend treating them like criminals.
I loved all the support Sarah got at the family dinner table, but I would have given anything for a conversation between her and Danny about what went down with Phoebe.

On Blue Bloods Season 7 Episode 2, Danny found out his older son had sneaked out to a party, gotten drunk, and had a serious talk with him — then used what he learned from how his son was using his phone to crack a case.
He would have had a lot to say about how Sarah was handling the Phoebe situation, given his own experience, and that might have been a nice emotional bonding moment.
Even without that, the Silvers felt like a real family, making this family dinner the best one yet.
Sarah’s situation is complicated because she isn’t Phoebe’s mother and isn’t married to Phoebe’s father, but I’m glad that she and Phoebe’s dad seemed to be on the same page, and that he even suggested they move in together after she punished Phoebe for sneaking around.
I Loved Mae’s Case, But Not Sean and Jonah’s

Sean and Jonah’s case was so ridiculous that I don’t want to waste time on it.
Don’t these two have a supervising officer? Why was Danny the only one who told them that they shouldn’t be doing a scavenger hunt in search of a missing person instead of their actual job?
They found the guy in the end, and Danny admitted he would have done the same thing when he was a rookie cop, but the whole thing felt unrealistic.
I loved Mae’s case as much as I hated Sean’s. It reminded me of Law & Order: SVU, with Mae empathetic toward the victim and the other DA insisting the case was unwinnable.
That other DA was annoying me.
I don’t know why Mae’s motives for pursuing the case were a mystery to him. She said she wanted the victim to decide, and the victim wanted to go ahead. That’s all.
