A 54-year-old bicyclist suffered major injuries Friday when he collided with a trolley east of the Santa Fe Depot.

The man was riding to the west in the 100 block of West C Street shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday when he crossed into the path of a light-rail car and was struck, according to San Diego police.

Paramedics took the victim to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest for treatment of severe head injuries. He was not expected to survive, Officer David O’Brien said.

The bicyclist initially was said to be suffering from a compound leg fracture.
