MarketInk: Awful Announcing ranks Padres TV announcers as ‘GOAT’

The San Diego Padres broadcast team of Don Orsillo on play-by-play and Mark Grant on analysis has been listed as No. 1 by Awful Announcing – a sports media website – in its annual rankings of top Major League Baseball local broadcasters.
With more than 31,500 individual fan-submitted votes from more than 3,000 respondents, the Orsillo-Grant duo received 1,047 “A” votes, the website said. They also received only 34 Fs, the fifth-lowest in the poll.
Awful Announcing said that the Padres broadcasters earned a cumulative score of 3.47. In a statement, the website said, “This booth finished first in our 2019 poll with a 2.99, third in 2023 with a 3.24, and third last year with a 3.26. There were at least 65 usages of either ‘best’ or ‘GOAT’ for this booth, far more than we saw for any other announcing team.”
Fans were asked to grade their team’s respective broadcasters between an “A” and “F,” with each letter matching a numerical grade from 1 to 5. For Orsillo-Grant, “A” was the most common grade at 69.5%, while 94.6% of their grades ranged between “A” and “C.”
Awful Announcing said comments from voters included:
- “One of the few booths that can achieve unhinged humor.”
- “Orsillo has been an ace for a long time, and Grant is a ‘quirky’ analyst who makes the game fun to watch.”
- “Hilariously entertaining while simultaneously doing an excellent job announcing the game.”
- “Would give an A+ if I could. Orsillo and Grant are by far the best duo in the game.”
Grant has been a Padres broadcaster since 1996, while Orsillo moved over to the Padres from the Boston Red Sox ahead of the 2016 season. Padres TV broadcasters also include Jesse Agler on play-by-play and Tony Gwynn Jr. on analysis.
Founded in 2006, the website reports on sports broadcasting, shares media-related news and interviews. The rankings of broadcasters with all 32 MLB teams can be found here.
